Etsy is seeking a Software Reliability Engineer to join the Database Reliability Engineering team and help build and maintain the tools and infrastructure that directly impact the productivity of our organization.
The Database Infrastructure team owns the database platforms that underpin etsy.com. This primarily consists of Vitess, MySQL, Memcached and Redis. We work with various tools and languages to support multiple services, including Google Cloud Platform, Chef, Ansible, Terraform, Python, and Go.
We’re looking for someone who is equally excited about databases, infrastructure and reliability engineering, who excels at working with others and are extraordinary problem-solvers. We value a positive can-do attitude, clear communication, honest feedback and empathy for the users of our services.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Online Database Engineering. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.
What’s this team like at Etsy?
Our team focuses on data integrity, availability, scalability and latency with a focus on cloud automation and efficiency.
We provide a proven and stable data foundation for developers to build a stack upon.
We work at scale, supporting petabytes of data, millions of requests a second and a continuous development process.
You will be on call ~once a month. On call means responding to PagerDuty out of hours and fielding questions/issues. When not on call you may be working on projects to reduce the likelihood of getting paged.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Manage and improve multiple large-scale, cloud-hosted Vitess, MySQL, Memcached, and Redis environments
Build and enhance our tooling, automation, and CI/CD workflows that provide safe self-service capabilities to your SRE team and software engineering teams
Collaborate with software engineering and operations teams to quickly highlight and resolve problems with database systems
Ensure appropriate documentation is developed and maintained relative to the environments we support
Meet critical latency, availability, and reliability goals and service level objectives.
Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
You have 2+ years of experience in similar DBRE, SRE, or DevOps roles in a cloud-based environment (Google Cloud Platform preferred)
2+ years of software engineering experience in a modern programming language (e.g. Python, Go)
1+ years of hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tooling is essential (we like Ansible, Chef, Terraform)
You feel right at home with Linux operating systems and administration
You enjoy solving problems through your positive, inclusive, can-do attitude, and are able to work effectively both with teammates and independently, whether remote or in-person
You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality and are willing to work with and improve other engineers' code
You are creative and passionate about technology and are as eager to contribute and share your knowledge and ideas as you are to learn from others
You understand that being an efficient SRE is as much about empathy and human interactions as it is about writing code
