What’s the role?

The individual in this role will lead projects in the ML Enablement - Models team to bring the latest innovative MLOps solutions to internal customers (Search, Ads, Personalization, and Trust/Safety) and enable them to experiment and iterate faster.
 

This senior-level individual would be expected to take ownership and accountability for medium to high complexity initiatives that impact ML modelers and engineers across the company. They must possess a high level of expertise and proficiently in ML and MLOps domains.
 

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager.  In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 
 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy? 

The Models team is a medium size organization with a focus to deliver robust technology and platform solutions across ML model lifecycle from training, optimization, deployment, and inference. The team’s aim is to enable our customers to experiment, iterate faster and productionize ML models, and integrate them into the Etsy tech stack.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• The day-to-day work comprises software architecture development and design, assisting with initiative planning at macro (yearly/quarterly) and tactical (sprint-level) scale, leading software development toward the project and team’s goals, and leading production support for internal services

• Additionally, this individual will represent their team’s work in planning, project coordination, and technical leadership. They would be responsible for mentorship of the team colleagues and raising the technical caliber of the team.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

The ideal candidate brings broad experience building internet scale systems with ML and MLOps:

• Hands-on ML modeling and training experience with PyTorch and/or Tensorflow, coupled with solid theoretical foundations of ML/DL models in ranking/recommendation systems, and LLMs (plus).

• Programming languages: Python, Java or Scala (plus)

• ML/DL Frameworks: Tensorflow, PyTorch, Spark, Airflow, Kubeflow.

• Platform: Terraform, GCP and GCP VertexAI, AWS and AWS AI platform (plus), Monitoring/Observability, experience with production support tools of internet scale systems.

• Solid knowledge of compute and memory architectures, experience with compute clusters and distributed systems in the public cloud.

• Back-end engineering: hands-on experience designing, implementing, deploying and supporting in production of complex systems based on the microservice architecture. Experience with performance, cost analysis and optimization.

• Breadth of knowledge of the MLOps ecosystem: vendors, technologies and algorithms, SOTA optimization techniques.
