What's the role?
We are looking for a product focussed backend engineer, to join a multi-platform app development team, where they will have the opportunity to work on the biggest bets for Etsy's business and contribute directly to the company goals and growth.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Mexico City office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?
The engineer will be part of an app team within our Recommendations group. They will collaborate with mobile app developers in building delightful shopping experiences for millions of users as they shop for nearly one hundred million listings on the Etsy Marketplace.
The teams in the Recommendations group are a cross-functional product development team consisting of engineers, product managers, designers, product marketers, data analysts and user researchers. We collaborate closely and learn via data, user interviews, experimentation and iteration so that we can take a holistic approach to improving the buyer and seller experience in our mobile apps.

What does the day-to-day look like?
Build solutions to help our nearly 100M buyers discover items from Etsy’s outstanding and diverse listing's inventory for their personalized shopping missions.
Prototype, optimize, and deploy large-scale product improvements that deliver key results.
Run A/B experiments to validate product improvements.
Collaborate with product managers, product designers, analysts, researchers, and other full-stack engineers to deliver optimal content to our buyers.
Lead and assist in performing product testing including unit, functional, visual, etc.
Continue to advance your skills in using modern architecture and patterns in a collaborative setting.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
At least 8 years of professional backend development experience, ideally in a product-minded environment.
Understand the ins and outs of creating an API to be consumed by multiple platforms (we work in PHP and MySQL for our APIs that are consumed by mobile apps)
Experience with API development and network call debugging practices and tools.
Proficiency with version control tools (our tooling and processes are based on git and GitHub).
Unit testing experience.
Approach engineering from a product perspective. The work you'll do here will impact millions of users and it is important to understand their problems and find effective solutions for them.
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional team members, such as Product Managers, Designers, QA, and product engineers.
Ability to define and solve unconstrained problems, and know when to seek help when no progress is being made.
Desire to learn new systems and technologies.
Interest in monitoring the health and performance of the applications your team owns.
Have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.
