What’s the role?

The Senior Employee Relations Manager is responsible for managing and resolving complex employee relations situations and investigations, with the broader aim of fostering impactful and engaged teams at Etsy. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director, Employee Relations, based out of Etsy’s People Strategy team. 

This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?

• This is a small, collaborative Employee Relations team that supports HRBPs and our employees (managers and individual contributors alike) on complex ER issues in the US and internationally

• The team is geographically distributed and works across multiple time zones to provide hands-on support, often advising on various situations and working with stakeholders across the business.

• This role will work closely with the HR Business Partner and Employment Counsel teams 

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Reviewing, advising on and resolving sensitive employee concerns and investigations in a timely manner, which may include interpersonal conflicts, employee complaints, performance management, disciplinary actions, and allegations of harassment, discrimination or retaliation. 

• Conducting complex and sensitive employee investigations with support from Employment Counsel, which may include determining appropriate investigation strategies, leading witness interviews, creating any required documents, and determining findings and recommendations for appropriate resolution. 

• Partner collaboratively with HRBPs, Employment Counsel, People Communications, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Benefits, HR Operations & Systems to advise on sensitive or nuanced issues, address performance issues, and provide guidance and recommendations.

• Review, analyze and make recommendations on accommodations and complex leave situations in partnership with our Benefits team. 

• Where applicable, draft well-written investigation-related documents, including leader or HRBP talking points, written warnings and other documents with little supervision.

• Proactively maintain confidential ER data, reporting, and other documentation to ensure accuracy and efficiency 

• Develop and iterate on existing ER policies, processes, and templates, including performance improvement plans and investigations.

• Provide training to relevant business stakeholders and HRBPs on ER topics and best practices.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• 7+ years Employee Relations or related experience

• Experience leading a wide variety of complex employee investigations with little supervision

• Excellent decision making, problem solving, critical thinking and writing skills 

• Advanced understanding of employment and HR related laws, regulations, policies, principles, concepts and practices, including Title VII, ADA, ADAA, and FMLA.

• High emotional intelligence and strong people skills

• Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential matters with compassion and equity.

• Ability to work collaboratively, lead and influence at all levels within the organization, and make decisions while keeping all partners and leaders informed

• Ability to position self as credible, proactive and a trusted thought-partner.

• Independent work style, balancing the need for collaboration with minimal supervision.

• Ability to manage multiple projects with strong time management and prioritization skills

• Excellent communication and presentation skills, including verbal and written
