What’s the role?
We are looking for a Staff Engineer I to take the lead on directing and implementing solutions to significantly complex, unscoped problems. Your work will extend to many parts of the domain and may influence your entire department or domain. You will set the technical direction for your teammates, improve the overall quality of engineering done on your team, and consistently take steps to support the growth and success of your teammates.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Inventory & Fulfillment Systems. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Mexico City office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. This role is situated in a newly created organization focused on inventory. Etsy is investing in new foundational infrastructure, data architecture, and a deeper understanding of the data that makes up Etsy’s catalog of our seller’s unique items. Etsy is seeking a senior engineering individual contributor who can bring industry-grounded experience to lead technical designs and guide decision-making around trade-offs.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Providing daily support for peers across Etsy (ex. writing documentation, reviewing pull requests, answering Slack questions, auditing new features, hosting office hours and classes)
Contributing at all levels of Etsy’s inventory/catalog stacks, ranging from application back-end technologies (PHP) as well as front-end stack (Preact, Redux Toolkit, Formik, Vest).
Developing and maintaining critical path product services.
Provide detailed and constructive design and code reviews.
Gaining insights through research, data analysis, and our A/B tests.
Pushing code to production early and often using our continuous deployment systems.
Building and maintaining observability and test tooling - logging, monitoring, distributed tracing, alerting and offline test tools needed for search and recommendation systems.
Practicing continuous learning and agile delivery models to stay informed and focused on our deliverables.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
10+ years of experience.
You come from working on the Inventory ecosystem as your day to day work and are passionate about idea of implementing best practices and building some critical ideas that can help optimize all aspects of the Inventory systems.
You are a full stack Web developer, stronger in backend development.
You have experience in information retrieval systems and the ability to write high performance production quality code.
You have the capacity to operate within a large codebase and you know how to craft simplicity from complex systems and understand the fundamentals of building robust services.
Proficiency in PHP and MySQL is a plus.
You are familiar with React and overall frontend development.
Experience updating complex data models in performant ways (like knowing how to implement parallel writes for optimizations).
Holds significant experience working with relational databases and feels confident diving into the database.
Flexibility with different programming languages and cloud-native environments.
Partnering as a strong collaborator and communicator and making the team around you grow and learn.
Taking the lead on advising and implementing solutions to significantly complex unscoped problems
Demonstrate written understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability.
You enjoy thinking about the implications of your work on end users, and have an understanding of the various aspects involved in running a large-scale website.
Experience leading, mentoring, and coaching other engineers in a compassionate manner
Successful track record of planning and leading complex projects to completion.
A growth mindset with excitement towards receiving feedback and learning opportunities
A strong sense of ownership towards your work
A desire to understand the “why” behind what we are doing
