What’s the role?
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer I, Android to join our established yet evolving Design Systems team. You will have the opportunity to contribute directly to Etsy’s design system, alongside mobile engineers and partners. You’ll help us build industry leading solutions to help our buyers and sellers of Etsy. You’ll work cross functionally with Product, Design, and Analytics solving real user problems.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Performance & Accessibility Experience (PAX). This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Mexico City office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Design Systems is responsible for the concepts, guides, systems, and components that make up the fabric of Etsy’s customer experience.
Our product teams use Etsy’s mature Design System, “Collage”, to build beautiful, engaging, inclusive, accessible and useful products consistently to Etsy’s Buyers and Sellers.
You will work directly with Design, Product and Engineering leadership across all platforms to craft our growing landscape of systems. Your work will have a multiplier effect, touching all of Etsy’s product teams as well as every piece of the customer journey.

What does the day-to-day look like?
Serve as an advocate for Design Systems, Android, and Accessibility across Etsy
Create and update reusable components that are used by product teams across all of Etsy
Contribute to and lead projects - such as introducing Design Tokens, improving our Metrics, or re-writing our Overlay component
Provide daily support for peers across Etsy (ex. writing documentation, reviewing pull requests, answering Slack questions, auditing new features, hosting office hours and classes)
Identify and propose tracks of work and tech debt that move our Design System forward
Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
3 to 5 years of professional Android development experience, ideally in a product-minded environment.
Proficiency in Kotlin and Java.
Experience working on a Design Systems team is preferred
Strong proficiency in both XML and Jetpack Compose UI frameworks
Product engineering mindset. The work you’ll do here will impact millions of users, it’s essential to understand the users’ problems and find effective solutions for them.
Experience with Android development and debugging practices and tools.
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional team members, such as Product Managers, Designers, QA, and product engineers.
Proficiency with version control tools (our tooling and processes are based on git and GitHub).
Unit testing experience.
Ability to define and solve unconstrained problems, and know when to seek help when no progress is being made.
Desire to learn new systems and technologies.
Interest in monitoring the health and performance of the applications your team owns.
Have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.
You can communicate with your team in a transparent and effective way.
