What’s the role?

As a Principal Architect, you will identify and build support for technical initiatives that address Etsy's most important needs. You will define the technical vision and strategy that guide engineers across departments to solve Etsy's thorniest, most intractable technical problems. Your work will create a significant and lasting impact on Etsy's business and Engineering goals, while enabling many other teams to reach their goals as well. Ultimately, you are responsible for the aggregate quality of technical decision-making at Etsy. You consistently take steps to support the growth and success of both engineers and non-engineers across Etsy.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Director, Architecture. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What does the day-to-day look like:

• Design and direct solutions for complex, unbounded problems.

• Discover opportunities to improve our architecture, operability or capabilities.

• Identify barriers that are slowing down teams and initiatives at Etsy and create practical socio-technical solutions to increase efficiency.

• Have a deep understanding of organizational context and account for it in the design of socio-technical systems.

• Provide actionable direction to teams in the face of complex problems involving multiple stakeholders.

• Continuously create and maintain alignment between groups.

• Identify barriers that are slowing down teams and initiatives at Etsy and create practical socio-technical solutions to increase efficiency.

• ​Have a deep understanding of organizational context and account for it in the design of socio-technical systems.

• Lead high-leverage initiatives that improve our Engineering organization’s ability to build, operate, learn or grow.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• 10+ years of professional software development experience, including technical leadership, ideally in a product-minded environment.

• You have built backend systems serving millions of customers. High availability, security, maintainability are second nature in your design.

• Work cross-functionally with numerous engineering teams, participating in design, prioritization and some implementation.

• You have a knack for organization and breaking down large problems into smaller ones.
