Etsy's is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Services SRE team. This team is responsible for ensuring the reliability and availability of Etsy’s critical services that support Search, Ads, Recommendations, and Machine Learning.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering, Search Platform. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?
The Services SRE team, which is part of the Services Infra & SRE organization, ensures the reliability and availability of business-critical services. Their key responsibilities include:
Work closely with product and enablement teams to design, deploy, and enhance the reliability of services running on Kubernetes (GKE), while implementing best practices.
Own the end-to-end development experience for most services across Search, Ads, and Recommendations, empowering developers to deploy code safely and efficiently.
Promote the adoption of standardized processes and tools for consistent service support.
Ensure services meet the required Production Readiness Rubric (PRR) standards.
Provide 24/7 on-call support, focusing on the reliability of supported services.
Lead post-incident analysis and drive remediation efforts.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Lead a team of 5 to 8 SREs, spending the majority of your time guiding and coaching engineers to achieve results together, while not hesitating to dive deep technically if required.
Partake in technical conversations with your engineers and leverage your previous experience to provide technical direction and influence technical decisions.
Build, lead and mentor your team on communication (up, down, and sidewards), technical strategy, delivery, and execution.
Work closely and collaboratively with partner teams to understand their problems and remain flexible to changes in the roadmap.
Define methods and success metrics for both current projects and future proposals.
Lead all aspects of people development, including mentoring, performance reviews, promotions, hiring, and retention.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
Significant hands-on experience as a software engineer, SRE, or system administrator in a cloud environment, with at least 3 years of experience in technical team management, specifically leading SRE teams responsible for the uptime of business-critical production environments.
A passion for building highly scalable, fault-tolerant systems and an understanding of good systems design.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues accurately to both technical and non-technical audiences at different levels of detail.
Experience in making data-driven decisions and flexibility to course correct and iterate at scale.
Proven ability to develop strong mechanisms for organizing, tracking, and measuring technical work, and making it visible to various stakeholders.
An understanding of what motivates your team and how to create the space necessary for them to do their best work.
The ability to be engaged in technical decisions and discussions while knowing when to defer to technical leaders.
A clear understanding of the direction your team needs to take to achieve their goals and the ability to establish success metrics to iteratively progress toward them.
Prior experience managing high scale distributed systems in Kubernetes.
