Salary Range:
$176,000.00 - $228,000.00What’s the role?
The Director of Fraud is responsible for building detection and enforcement programs to protect the Etsy marketplace from financial loss related to fraudulent buyers and sellers. In this capacity, you’ll take a multi-layered approach to understand the ways in which bad actors introduce risk into our ecosystem, devise detection strategies to combat that risk, and build enforcement programs intended to mitigate fraudulent behavior across our ecosystem. This role will lead a globally distributed team of managers and fraud enforcement specialists and work closely with partners across Product, Engineering, Analytics, Finance, Fulfillment, Communications, Compliance, and Member Support teams.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Director of Risk and Fraud (R&F),. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?
You protect Etsy from fraudulent activity resulting in financial harm to Etsy and Etsy members. You and your teams build buyer and seller trust by helping to ensure all users feel secure when transacting on Etsy. You will run a large operation dedicated to understanding the myriad ways that fraud manifests in the marketplace, informing our strategy to predict, prevent, detect, and mitigate those risks, and enforcing and removing bad actors from the platform.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Lead a team of senior managers, subject matter authorities, and outsourced operations
Direct day-to-day operations of the fraud detection verticals including payment fraud, seller fraud, and account integrity
Develop high-reaching goals for annual strategy and collaborate with cross functional partner teams in the alignment, planning and execution
Build an enforcement strategy that balances potential losses with the goal of minimizing false positives and disruption to our member base
Contribute to our machine learning and automation strategies by driving projects that improve our suite of automated controls, increase real time monitoring and alerting on anomalous behavior, and create stronger feedback loops to analytics and data science teams
Monitor and assess the effectiveness of our controls, identify gaps, and make recommendations for improvement
Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering to implement product improvements that detect and prevent fraudulent actors and build trust in our marketplace
Develop, and meet or exceed critical business metrics (KPIs) and consistent execution against quarterly/annual goals; communicate progress and impediments to senior leadership
Work cross-functionally by providing guidance on policy, product experiences, or member communications
Collaborate in building a comprehensive structured QA program across the fraud teams, including outsourced partners

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
10+ years of leadership experience in risk, fraud, payments, KYC, or chargeback management
Deep subject matter expertise in fraud with an ability to apply that expertise in a two-sided marketplace
Creating performance indicators and analyses to drive decisions
Demonstrating strategic thought leadership and industry expertise, responsible for the continuous improvement of our function in meeting the growing complexity and business needs to support Etsy's long term goals
Navigating ambiguity and sensitive environments, and making effective decisions with limited data points available
Harnessing excellent communication and presentation skills to articulate strategies to senior audiences and influence business outcomes
Anticipating business risks, including identifying gaps and inefficiencies in policies and enforcement operations, and coming up with long-term scalable and realistic solutions
Building teams that excel at collaboration and can provide end-to-end solutions and recommendations
A track record of delivery on sophisticated projects, using strong relationship building skills and ability to influence and work cross-functionally
