The Compliance Engineering team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer I to strengthen Etsy’s compliance posture by building technical systems and tools that meet the needs of both regulatory and business needs. As a Senior Software Engineer I, you’ll be a technical and cross-functional leader on the software engineering team, supporting engineering best practices, best-in-class system design, and stakeholder management. Your written communication and technical documentation will enable alignment with internal and external teams, and your creative problem solving will help us scale ourselves to solve big challenges quickly and effectively. Because our work applies to many different systems at Etsy, your strength in entering new areas and domains and understanding the environment will help us deliver impact across the business.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Compliance Engineering. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?
The Compliance Engineering team is responsible for building technical systems to support compliance controls to ensure our regulatory requirements are fully met. This team works with both internal and external stakeholders to identify areas of investment, and work with teams across Etsy Engineering to identify solutions that solve for the controls and keep the engineers effective. Today, this team primarily focuses on Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Interface with internal and external stakeholders to describe current controls and understand areas of opportunity
Use PHP, Python, Typescript, Terraform, and other languages to build best-in-class systems
Understand our Google Cloud Platform infrastructure and make recommendations to the team on approaches
Perform log analysis to identify system issues, monitor performance, and improve reliability.
Mentor other engineers through technical execution
Lead work through sometimes loosely-defined problem spaces, making a plan for execution and keeping stakeholders aligned on timeline, status and issues.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
Strong verbal and written communication
Experience with Google Cloud Platform strongly preferred
Experience with PHP, Python, Terraform, Typescript, Java or ability to learn
Familiarity with log analysis, ingestion, and storage
Instincts for tested code as well as observability to ensure systems are running correctly
Bonus if experienced with Sarbanes-Oxley legislation and controls
