What’s the role?

Etsy is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team that is improving the listing experience for sellers. You’ll help deliver a re-envisioned suite of experiences that enable millions of sellers to showcase their products and craft to interested buyers.

You’ll do this by helping deliver robust, scalable, full-stack products with updates grounded in experiments that will A/B tested live on Etsy.com and our Seller App. Your team will test new ideas, respond to seller research, and ship delightful solutions that support sellers in providing more complete and accurate information about their inventory. Staying at the forefront of technology, you’ll bring ideas that enable your team to rapidly iterate while maintaining a high bar for quality.

This is a full-time position reporting to a Director of Engineering within the Inventory & Fulfillment Systems team, which focuses on high impact improvements for connecting buyers to items that meet their shopping mission and supports sellers in meeting buyer expectations. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States and Canada. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office.  This team plays an important role in matching buyers with items that meet their shopping missions by supporting our sellers, building experiences so that sellers can provide information that better matches buyers with items they want to see and drives higher buyer satisfaction that the item received is as expected. Here’s a glimpse of the type of problems you’ll help solve:

• Launch improvements to the listing creation process that simplify the entire process for sellers so that sellers can have confidence their items meet buyer expectations and marketplace guidelines.

• Integrate machine learning models to guide sellers through the process, educating them on marketplace best practices with data backed recommendations to support them in reaching buyers

• Enable sellers to better articulate the breadth of options they offer to buyers and get buyer input with ease during the purchase process. 

• Develop features that streamline the management of sellers’ inventory, enabling them to scale and run their business with confidence. 

What does the day-to-day look like?

• Lead the engineering team within the context of product engineering, establishing effective process that increases collaboration across disciplines. 

• Lead a fast paced, data-driven, and agile team of 6 engineers to build systems that measurably improve the seller listing experience in close partnership with product teams.

• Take part in the end-to-end recruiting process, hiring and on-boarding exceptional engineering talent. 

• Serve as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the engineers on your team.

• Work with other leaders within engineering to develop and evolve engineering processes and standard methodologies.

• Establish strong cross-functional relationships with product engineers, product managers, user researchers, designers, analysts as well as platform, data, and infrastructure teams.

• Leverage established tools built by our enablement teams and help create new paved paths within product engineering context.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Extensive hands-on experience with high-volume, reliable user-facing experiences and their supporting backend systems within large codebases.

• Proven ability to work with non-engineering teams (Product, Design, Analytics) to deliver end-to-end systems, utilizing A/B testing for product updates.

• Experience setting technical strategy and shaping team processes for effective delivery.

• Skilled in coaching engineers and possessing excellent written and oral communication.

• Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Redux) and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure), including containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).

• Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.

• 3+ years of experience in people management.

• Ability to make data-driven decisions and promote high-quality technical decision-making, excelling in an experimentation and metrics-driven environment.
