Etsy is looking for an Android Engineer to join the Performance team under the Product Enablement organization, where you will improve the performance and performance monitoring of our native app. You will also work cross-functionally with product and platform teams to help them avoid shipping performance regressions and understand where improvements can be made.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.
For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.
The Performance Team delivers optimizations and observability to track and improve the experience Etsy’s users have, both on the web and in our native applications. We work with a wide range of teams across the company to provide the data they need to make informed decisions and the context they need to understand where improvements are called for. We work at all levels of the tech stack, driven by curiosity, empathy for our users, and a keen interest in answering “Why isn’t this faster?”. The team is experienced in web performance, and we’re looking to improve native app performance to match.
As an Android engineer, you will be responsible for pushing our codebase forward, shipping quickly and safely, and helping us on our most impactful projects.
You’ll improve the performance & monitoring of our Android app, and identify how to make writing and maintaining performant code easier for other teams.
We ship weekly and invest in testing & automation to enable that. To build with confidence, we extensively use remote configuration, feature flags, and declarative, server-driven APIs.
We also provide daily support for peers across Etsy (ex. writing documentation, reviewing pull requests, answering Slack questions, auditing new features)
Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.
Have previously worked on large Android applications with many developers or teams.
Can help to define unconstrained problems, and know when to seek help when no progress is being made.
Experience in Android debugging practices and tools, & interest in debugging unfamiliar code or systems
Product engineering mindset. The work you’ll do here will impact millions of users, it’s essential to understand the users’ problems and find effective solutions for them.
Have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.
Appreciate working with folks who value knowledge sharing, and want to contribute to a culture of generosity.
Lead with questions, curiosity, and kindness while being an excellent communicator.
Are comfortable with saying “I don’t know”, doing research, and returning with options complete with trade offs.
Proficiency in Kotlin and Java (we’re increasingly Kotlin, but some areas of our codebase are still 'classic' Java)
Proficiency in both XML and Jetpack Compose UI frameworks
