$205,000.00 - $237,000.00What’s the role?
We are looking for a Senior Applied Scientist II to join our Experimentation Insights team and help shape the future of experimentation at Etsy. In this role, you’ll bring deep expertise in statistics and causal inference to help us answer complex questions about what works, what doesn’t, and why. You will partner closely with product, engineering, and other data teams to support high-impact experiments and contribute to evolving our internal experimentation methodology.
The technology we build spans the full stack end to end; from user experience, to API design, backend service development, and database design. Depending on the needs of the business, our team may need to move up and down the stack, and in many cases collaborate with other teams to get to what needs to be done
This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Experimentation Insights. For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. The experimentation team’s vision is to empower everyone at Etsy to learn from their experiments and it builds the centralized experimentation platform used by various teams at Etsy.
The team is made up of engineers, product managers, designers, and data scientists.
As the engineering arm of the team, our vision is to provide a robust experimentation platform where it’s easy and fast to build new features.
The experimentation insights team contains both software engineers and data scientists, aiming to ensure experimenters can get trustworthy and actionable insights from their experiments in a timely manner.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Develop and enhance statistical models and methodologies for the experimentation platform used by Etsy.
Collaborate with engineering partners to ensure our ETLs and experiment pipelines are accurate, trustworthy, and scalable.
Provide statistical guidance and support to teams across Etsy on experimental design and measurement strategies.
Contribute to documentation, education, and tooling to make experimentation more accessible across the company.
Champion and evolve best practices in experimentation and measurement.
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
You have an advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Econometrics, or a related quantitative field.
You bring 5+ years of experience in applying statistical methods in a production environment. It is preferred if you have experience working on experimentation platforms before.
You have a strong foundation and experience in experimental design, statistical inference, and causal inference.
You’re comfortable working with large-scale datasets and distributed data systems (e.g., Spark, SQL), and efficient in Python.
You’re a clear communicator who enjoys partnering with diverse stakeholders, translating complex concepts into actionable insights.
You thrive in a collaborative environment and align with Etsy’s values of creativity, responsibility, and community.
